Guest Speaker: Sarah Burke of Habitat for Humanity Peterborough & Kawartha Region
Sarah Burke is the CEO of Habitat for Humanity Peterborough & Kawartha Region. She has seen tremendous growth over the last 11 years she has been employed by the affiliate. When she first started in 2007, the affiliate was a consistent one home a year builder, employed 5 FTE staff and brought in less than $400,000 in ReStore revenues. In 2018 the affiliate is building for and thus will serve 6 local families, employee 22 FTE staff and is expected to surpass $1.3 million is ReStore revenues.
Beyond just her work at Habitat, Sarah is committed to reducing poverty and combating the growing affordable housing crisis by working on several local boards and committees including being as a past board member and fundraising Chair for Peterborough Youth Emergency Shelter, a current committee member and Housing Supply Subcommittee Chair for AHAC (Affordable Housing Action Committee), and a member and Housing Chair for Peterborough Poverty Reduction Network. Currently Sarah sits on the Peterborough Kawartha Home Builders Association board and is about to join the Peteborough Rotary Club board in July 2018.
After completing her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from University of Waterloo, Sarah has also worked in Toronto as a Corporate Marketing and Sales Manager for five years prior to her move back to Peterborough. Over the years, Sarah has also been an entrepreneur, owning two successful businesses.
In November 2017, Sarah married the love of her life Howie. Along with being the mother of her three own children, she now has two step sons as well. Sarah spends most of her weekends either at hockey arenas or on the soccer fields depending on the time of year. Sarah’s pride and joy is her family, although her favourite activity (when possible) is sleeping in on a Saturday morning.
